Julie Morriss
Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist
Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist
Julie has worked as an Occupational Therapist for many years – too many to count! Most of this time has been in Mental Health with Adults, Adolescents, Children and their Families, and Older Adults.
Of particular interest to her, is the quality of the therapeutic relationship – with all age groups. Julie believes without a sturdy, trusting therapeutic relationship, there is little long-term gain from therapy.
Originally Julie worked within the WA Health Service with adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Here, she developed strong skills in case management, CBT and solution focused work. Whilst taking time away to be with her children, who are now adults, she embarked on extra study in body-centred therapies, and this led to an ongoing interest in fatigue and pain conditions. Working in this area highlighted the importance of the body’s wisdom and how intimately linked our emotions, psychology and physical senses are.
Whilst Julie continued to work with a variety of ages in the area of Mental Health, her enthusiastic interest in therapy enabled her to -
Develop a Child and Adolescent Day Program
Work interstate in Adolescent Mental Health Programs
Work for a year in one of the remote aboriginal communities in the Pilbara
Train in Trauma Informed Care
Complete a training in Just Right State – addressing the sensory aspects to emotional regulation
During this time Julie began to be more interested in Professional Supervision and completed advanced supervision courses with WA based, interstate and international supervisors. Julie considers “regular, high-quality supervision” is imperative for therapists of all professions and human service workers.
Julie considers Professional Supervision to be an umbrella term that covers Clinical Supervision and much more! It promotes reflective practice and emotional regulation – necessary for sustaining genuine personal, and professional growth.
Regular Professional Supervision is particularly important when working with complex conditions. Julie has extensive experience in working with clients with complex conditions, knowing that our physical and emotional health, influences all aspects of our life, and visa-versa.
Professional Supervision needs to be inspiring and authentic, to allow us to bring the best version of ourselves to our work – and to provide the most impactful work to our clients. Quality supervision assists in managing burnout, countering stagnation or demotivation, and igniting our imagination!
When Julie isn’t working, she loves to garden, kayak and practice yoga. Spending time with family is precious to her, as is her love of birds and animals, so she is often outdoors.
